In honor of our beloved founder, Sylvan R. Shemitz, The Lighting Quotient is partnering with the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) of North America to sponsor a yearly scholarship for undergraduate and graduate students in accredited lighting programs. This is the inaugural year for the scholarship, which is open for entries through May 1, 2010. Students must submit a 1,500-word essay titled “The Next Generation of Lighting: How would you bring a historical lighting installation into the next generation of sustainability?” Judges from The Lighting Quotient and the IES will select the winning essay, and award the student a $2,500 scholarship. The Lighting Quotient has also started an endowment fund of $50,000 that will grow to support the scholarship, so we can continue to honor Sy for years to come. The Lighting Quotient has recently received accolades among the design and business communities for the new Tambour series. Tambour was recognized with the "Good Design Award" by The Chicago Athenaeum, Museum of Architecture and Design. The Good Design Awards are selected from thousands of entries worldwide and judged by a jury of architects, designers and authorities in the design community.
