What is tambient?

tambient® is a portable, furniture-based lighting system that delivers exceptional visual comfort and user satisfaction while eliminating the need for fixed, hardwired, ceiling-mounted office lighting and supplemental task lights. By eliminating glare, improving luminance ratios, and positioning lights so every occupant has control, tambient® creates preferred destinations that elevate worker satisfaction and productivity.

Are there mounting options for my furniture system?

Yes. Universal and brand specific mounting accessories are available. If by chance you are using a furniture system that we have not yet encountered, we can create a custom mounting accessory for your project.

Does the tambient system work with height-adjustable worksurfaces?

Yes! Our single-sided Style L305 luminaires are perfect for spaces with height-adjustable worksurfaces. We recommend mounting these to the worksurfaces so they rare always properly positioned for seated and standing work.

I have a high ceiling; can tambient® be used in this application?

Yes, we love high ceilings!  Ask us for high ceiling case studies.

What type of ceiling finishes are best for tambient?

Matte white finishes are best. This is true for any indirect lighting system. For ceilings and open structures that are non-white, luminaires with higher uplight output can be specified. Please contact applications@tambient.com for assistance.

How can I be sure that I’ll have enough task and ambient light in my open office area?

We can provide a layout and lighting calculations that predict task and ambient light levels based on your plans. Please contact our applications group at applications@tambient.com. We would be glad to help!.

What control options are available for tambient fixtures?

A pushbutton on the luminaire allows each occupant to dim the downward task light portion to a comfortable level and turn it ON and OFF. In shared office spaces, the ambient “uplight” portion of the fixtures connect to standard building lighting control devices and systems and operate just like lighting located at the ceiling. These connections can be wired or wireless to provide automatic occupancy and/or vacancy response, daylight response, manual ON/OFF and dimming control, demand response and more. In private offices, a second pushbutton is optional to add uplight control at the luminaire..

Will the task light turn OFF automatically when the occupant leaves?

An integral circuit automatically turns the task light OFF when the uplight turns OFF. Also, when used with the uplight OFF, the task light operates on a 1-hour countdown timer and the user can tap the pushbutton to add time. These standard features typically qualify for the automatic shut-OFF exemption found in most energy codes. To add additional auto-OFF events, an under-desk motion sensor accessory is available.

Are tambient® fixtures available in custom finishes?

Yes, tambient® fixtures can be provided in a custom color finish. There is a custom finish set up charge.

In which specification Section or Division should tambient be specified?

Division 12 “Furnishings” is the preferred specification section for all parts of the tambient system that relate to the furniture.  For items that attach to the building, such as wireless signal transmitters, Division 26 “Electrical and Lighting” is preferred. Regardless as to which Division is used, freestanding tambient® luminaires, and tambient® luminaires mounted on office furniture and powered via cord and plug, qualify for accelerated depreciation tax savings, where applicable.

Where can I purchase tambient® lighting?

tambient® is sold through office furniture dealers and electrical/lighting distributors. Your local tambient representative can help you locate a dealer or distributor. You can find your rep here: FindMyRep.

Who installs tambient® fixtures?

tambient® luminaires are easily installed by facility personnel, furniture installers, and electricians. In some jurisdictions, plugging the luminaire power supply into the furniture power receptacle must be performed by an electrician regardless of who assembles and installs the light on the furniture. Associated lighting control signal transmitters (if any) must be installed by the electrical contractor. Project specifications should assign the responsibility for furnishing, installing, and commissioning each item. Guidance for wireless control commissioning and control reconfigurations is available by contacting controls@thelightingquotient.com.

Can tambient® luminaires be used for emergency egress lighting?

tambient® luminaires can be factory modified for direct connection to emergency circuits and for mission-critical government installations. To maintain tambient® portability and tax benefits, supplementing standard tambient® lighting with complementary perimeter wall washers connected to emergency circuits along circulation pathways is a typical solution. In situations where tambient® luminaires are to be hardwired, please contact customs@thelightingquotient.com for assistance.

What is your warranty?

tambient® luminaires carry a 5-year warranty backed by a company with 40 years of manufacturing experience. Our monitor arm support assemblies carry a 10-year warranty. An extended warranty may be available for a fee. Please contact sales@tambient.com  for more information.
